Research Ethics
Research with children and families affected by incarceration demands care. We work within Kenya's research regulatory framework and with the approvals required for each study.
Participants receive clear information about each study, consent is sought as required, and findings are anonymised so that no child or family can be identified.
Our commitments
- Approval from the relevant authorities before research begins
- Informed consent, and parental or guardian consent for children
- Confidentiality and anonymised reporting
- The child's best interests above the research
- Safe storage and limited access to research data

Research Licensed by NACOSTI
Pathways of Promise Kenya is informed by a commitment to evidence-based practice, ethical inquiry and a deeper understanding of the experiences of children affected by parental incarceration.
Our founder, Wambui Mumbi, has been licensed by the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI) to conduct research on The Plight of Children of Incarcerated Parents: A Case Study of Kenyan Prisons. The research licence reflects a commitment to undertaking research within Kenya's established regulatory framework.
Through research and field engagement, we seek to contribute to a stronger understanding of the experiences, vulnerabilities and support needs of children affected by parental incarceration, informing more responsive programmes, policy discussions and advocacy.
Research licences and approvals are available to donors and partners on request.
